    International Rankings

    The International Rankings are acquiring a growing relevance for their key role in the capacity enhancement of HE Institutions and Systems to attract students and researchers.

    Motivation

    The EC in the last 20 years has funded specific programmes for the enhancement of the EHEA attractiveness and in the last 10 years about half of the students who decide to study abroad – more than doubled – choose a European institution.
    The international rankings provide people with a great support in choosing the country and the institution where studying and making research, since they:
    - allow a comparison of the best universities on several indicators; n. of students, n. of teachers, n. of foreign students and staff, citations, reputation, awards and funds;
    - provide a detailed comparative assessment of the study fields;
    - carry on an assessment of methods and actions put in place for favouring personal and professional growth.
    Thus, for an institution, a good positioning in these rankings represents a relevant opportunity to promote its image all over the world.

    The main international rankings and the used methodologies

    It is important to observe that any method used to assess the complexity of a university in the implementation of its three missions, has its own limits and distortions.
    Thus, in order to read the results under a correct perspective, it is fundamental to be acquainted with the methodologies used by the most renowned rankings, as well as it is important to know that among more than 18.000 accredited higher institutions only 1.000 (less than 6%) are ranked. Thus, being among the first 1.000 universities in the world, is a great result especially for an Italian State University whose performance is constrained in several indicators such as public funds (among the lowest in Europe), teachers/students ratio, attractiveness of talents (low and fixed salaries) due to the HE system organization.
    A better representation of the universities is provided by the rankings by subject, since they are assessed against comparable data that highlight the present excellent disciplines and fields.
