Il 1° giugno 2023 ha segnato l’inizio del progetto LIFE EOLIZARD, un'iniziativa finanziata dal programma LIFE dell’Unione Europea. Questo progetto di durata quinquennale è stato sviluppato dall’Università di Roma Tre, in collaborazione con l'Associazione Triton e importanti partner scientifici.
Stato dell’arte
La lucertola delle Eolie, Podarcis raffonei, ha dimostrato una notevole resilienza e capacità di adattamento in territori caratterizzati da risorse trofiche limitate. Purtroppo, negli ultimi decenni, l'habitat della lucertola delle Eolie è stato minacciato dall'espansione dell’uomo, con la perdita e il degrado degli habitat idonei, l'abbandono dei pascoli e soprattutto l'introduzione della lucertola campestre (Podarcis siculus) che compete e si ibridizza con la lucertola delle Eolie. Questi fattori hanno drasticamente ridotto la presenza di questa specie, limitandola a tre isolotti e a un piccolo promonotorio dell'arcipelago.
Obiettivo
In risposta a questa situazione critica, il progetto LIFE EOLIZARD è stato concepito per tutelare le popolazioni rimanenti della lucertola delle Eolie e garantire la sopravvivenza a lungo termine. Il progetto mira all’implementazione di un programma di ripopolamento, con l’obiettivo di creare un santuario per la specie dove fondare nuove popolazioni, riducendo così significativamente il rischio di estinzione.

June 1, 2023 marked the start of the LIFE EOLIZARD project, an initiative funded by the LIFE program of the European Union. This five-year project was developed by the University of Roma Tre, in collaboration with the Triton Association and important scientific partners.
The Aeolian wall lizard, Podarcis raffonei, has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability in territories characterized by limited trophic resources. Unfortunately, in recent decades, the habitat ofthe Aeolian wall lizard has been threatened by human expansion, with the loss and degradation of suitable habitats, the abandonment of pastures and above all the introduction of the wall lizard(Podarcis siculus) which competes and hybridizes with the Aeolian wall lizard. These factors have drastically reduced the presence of this species, limiting it to three islets and a small promontoryof the archipelago.
In response to this critical situation, the LIFE EOLIZARD project was conceived to protect the remaining populations of the Aeolian lizard and ensure its long-term survival. The project aims to implement a repopulation program, with the aim of creating a sanctuary for the species where new populations can be established, thus significantly reducing the risk of extinction.
